Personal Galleries

OK, I told everyone that my goal was to get to a point whereby you could sell your work from the Website. Frankly, the participation does not warrant doing this at this point by myself. I do however have something as a starting point. I know there are a lot of free services out there whereby you can submit any photo you want with your friends and family. I take no exception to this, however this is not the ”row I want to hoe!”

To get moving towards selling your photos on line, I am seeking your consideration.

Imagine that:

• I can provide you with a single page website customized to you specifications
o You can also submit your own website design!
• Your link to the world to the world would be , i.e. http:// apow.com/LVE Gallery
o This is important for name recognition
• You could put up to 100 photos in up to five different albums of your choosing
o This is a starting point
o All photos must be of high saleable quality
 I have final decision on this
 This is not designed for snapshots to share!
o All sales would be between you and the prospective buyer
 This information would be on your website
• There would be a cost associated with this to setup and maintain
o No commissions would be payable to APOW
o Sales would be directly between you and the buyer
o I will evaluate costs based on your interests!
o 30% of all revenues would be invested in advertising your Galleries
o An accounting of this would be provided to those who elect to participate.
• The Gallery format itself would be exactly like the current galleries. The link would take you directly to your personal gallery.
o The only advertising on your page would be apow.com
 All of the free sites make their money by deluging the users with advertising and that is how they do this for free.
 Nobody makes money doing it this way
o Uploading will be modified to allow you to upload up to 20 photos at a time in similar fashion to the way it is done with the current galleries one at a time.
o You would have Administrator privileges which would permit you to customize your gallery.
 This is easy, but I will provide technical guidance at no charge
o You may add delete files as you determine appropriate
o You have more than 100 photos
 The cost for this will be determined based on what I can negotiate with my provider.
• I pay an annual fee plus bandwidth, which means that based on how much I use, my costs varies!

I believe I have demonstrated my integrity and I while this is a new venture for which I cannot guarantee success, this is a model based on a lot of research.

May I please have your comments and thoughts?

Thank you!

This sounds like a great idea.....

This sounds like a workable plan, but for one I will need to give it a great deal of thought as to heaps of particulars.....

1. Is it going to be a case of all of us providing the same pricing structure depending on size of prints , matt/gloss, postage and handling, with the only variable being the actual photographs that are ours.....

Reason I ask is that I have a site on a photographic website but they offer US$0.10 cent prints for 4X6, which is one of their advertising tools, yet in Sydney the best rate on top quality 4X6 prints start at AUS $15 if you are seriously going to make a living from photography.

The general public do not seem to appreciate the time and effort that goes into producing THAT shot !

2. Could we sell photographs taken at weddings etc to those willing to purchase them using specified albums with secure passwords for those who want to keep their model release consent only between the photographer because they do not want their images on the web ?

I am only pulling these questions out of the air, hopefully others can come to you with more so we can see how many will consider this opportunity.....

Take care.....and thanks Larry for keeping us all in mind,

Shellt

ood Questions

Let's let this settle. I believe that if someone goes to a quality site, whereby everyone on that site produces high quality work, then, the price should be much higher. I have a friend of mine who sold a print on line for $22,000. He is a pro, and I promise you this is true. I had my own site, that i did not advertise, and I got 196,000 hits in one year. How many sold? ZERO! I think this is a very good topic to have a scheduled chat to discuss. Obviously if I had all of the answers I would be selling my photos and not running this site. If anyone thinks they are going to do this on their own or by posting on the free sites, forget it! There needs to be a place that is recognized as a place to go to find high quality work. Is this the answer, I think it has possibility if we work together. Let's just keep it going and decide from there. Your work is good enough to sell! I have sold some of mine, and for reasonably decent prices. What say all?

misspelt my own name....

How sad is that .....after all the schooling my parents put me through and I can't spell my own name.....must be old age catching up with me or the sheer lack of sleep from sitting up until early hours editing my photos!!!!!

Good thing that Apow can ID us when we post a thread !

I would be thrilled to sell my work, the more exhorbitant price the better, but we do have to be realistic too, (how big was that $22,000 print ? How cool does that sound !)

Take care.....

Shelly

Not sure of size

This guy actually started with Istock from the beginning and had built up a reputation and a very solid business selling srock photos. He does a lot of people shots and advertising work. He was also one of the Photgraphers for the Tampa Bay Bucaneers football team. I believe it was an 11 x 14 and was sold to an advertising company.

Sounds wonderful

Count me in to participate, but I haven't produced any $22000 photos in the last few days. ;-) I have been told that some of my parrot photos are good enough to sell.
No way would I sell one of my photos for ten cents. We have to start somewhere. I have to start looking at my photos with an eye to whether I would buy it or not. One question. When we sell a photo, do we actually have it printed or do we sell a file to download? I also assume we would offer different sizes of the same photo. Would the photos be jpegs or another file extension? What resolution would be required? I know my photos from the camera are well over 1 mg. I notice that photos for sale on other sites have something written across them so they cannot be pirated. Would you have something like APOW Galleries on the online view? I hope these are not dumb questions, but I am still very new at this, with only a couple years experience in amateur photography, compared to some of you that have been photographers for many years. Anyway, it sure would be nice to sell some of my stuff. (got my eye on some new equipment, but can't justify it yet) Nina

Thanks Nina

Let's move forward slowly and see if we can get this right. As far as putting the For Sale on te Photo, I do not like this idea. You can copyright your photos in other ways. We will discuss. To put a website or a gallery up and not advertise it, is tantamount to failure. The advantage to having this linked to APOW, if it works as planned, is that it will attract members as well as buyers. The more members that sign up for the site and the galleries, generate more money for advertising the work of the members. I am not going to subsidize this because, I have put an awful lot of work into this, and, I am just not getting enough play! This does not include you, and some other very loyal members, but I barely cover my costs, and obviously do not pay myself. No sour grapes just facts!

FYI, the guy who sold the photo is a Pro and he does a lot of people shots for big advertising companies. He is very good! I am also trying to get him involved but cannot do much until we get some more people. Obviously he would like to make some money! My, what a novel idea!

I'm in....

I've thought a lot about submitting my photos to various "cyber-stock photo galleries", but haven't done so, because I know nothing about their legitimacy or integrity. Having a safe venue, like this one, is perfect, and is one of the main reasons why I joined APOW. Count me in, Larry!! Judy

I'd Try It

Not sure what I have that's marketable but I must have 1 or 2 and will hopefully grow from there. It's for sure there is plenty of help here and enough fair and honest opinions here for one to make a reasonably smart choice/decision. I too have looked at the free sites and find it's a hopeless situation as they also display "snapshots", others are free until your well buttered up and then they whack you with a hugh membership or percentage. I must say ...you absolutely amaze me......BIG TAHNK YOU for all you do..Beth
