There is so much confusion out there. Several people have given opinions and Jacob provided a very excellent scenario on optimizing. I would like to explain a couple of things in very simple terms:
You set your camera up, and take a shot. Most cameras allow you to determine the size you want your photo be coming off the camera. It is a dimension X pixels High x Y pixels Wide. My opinion is that you should shoot always at the maximum JPG size your camera permits. (Varies by camera - Read the manual)
The camera I am using is 10 MP. The maximum size off the camera is 3872 x 2592 pixels. if you multiply those two numbers you will get 10 MP (10 milliion pixels)
Lets say you didn't want to do any editing on the shot or cropping, you just wanted to upload to APOW.
You should first resize the photo, as long as the dimesions are greater than 1024 pixels in any direction, and make the longest dimension 1024. Now comes the question as to how do you do that? You have to use an editing software that allows you to resize a file/photo proportionally. This means that when the largest dimension is set to 1024, the smaller dimension will automatically change to maintain the same proportion. Think like this- If I had and 8 x 10 and wanted to resize it to a 4 x 5, I would set the 10 to 5, and the 4 would automatically be set, keeping the same proportion.
Once you resize a photo, what you do next, depends on the software you are using. If your software does not have a feature to optimize the resized photo for presentation on the Web, then you must save it as a jpg, unless it is already a Jpg file that you have been editing and working on, which is not a good idea, and is another subject for another time. For now, at least those to which this is new, when you resize, no dimension should be larger than 1024 pixels, or 14.222 inches, and the largest dimension should never be less than 700 pixels.
By doing this, your photos will display better in APOW, particularly in Enlarged view, which is where you should go to base your evaluations. The days of submitting photos that are too large, or like postage stamps will come to an end in the very near future. We have to have a standard, and this is the start of that standard.
If there is a question on how to optimize the photo which would be the next step after resizing, then I ask you to contact me privately and tell me what kind of editing software you are using and I will tell you how to do it, if it can be done with your software. I can tell you how to do it right now with PS, CS2 or PP. It is my understanding Corel can also handle. This is important, and at least the resizing, will be mandatory in a very short time or the photos will not be approved. Let's Make It Happen! |
